Wallice: Summer 2023

Bowery Ballroom (New York, NY)
6/27/23

Singer-songwriter Wallice brought her alternative-indie music to New York City at the Bowery Ballroom. The last time Wallice was in NYC, she was an opener and her unreleased music was still being teased. Since then, she has performed to numerous sold-out stadiums across Asia, Australia, and Aotearoa whilst opening for The 1975 and garnering attention for her latest E.P., Mr Big Shot, along the way.

Seeing Wallice back in NYC on her own headline tour was gratifying, as I’ve been admiring her success from afar. She remained the same humble and charming performer – interacting with fans, accepting gifts from the crowd, and dancing and bantering with her bandmates, including her long-term boyfriend, onstage. Despite her E.P. coming out only the week before the concert, fans belted lyrics and immersed themselves in her gritty sounds. “Best Friend,” “Loser at Best,” “Prepaid Wireless,” and “disappear” all touch on the relatable experiences of entering and accepting adulthood, creating an angsty yet accepting energy in the room. She also performed “Japan,” a beautiful and moving track about losing touch with her Japanese roots.

In the span of just a few months, Wallice has achieved commendable worldwide recognition with her unique indie-rock sounds. Even so, she takes time to hang out with fans at her merch booth after every show. I can’t wait to see what comes next for her!
