The National (Richmond, VA)
03/07/23
The iconic alternative pop-rock band They Might Be Giants has plenty to celebrate these days. After postponing their 2022 tour supporting the release of their 23rd studio album, BOOK, a lengthy tour with a lengthy set was exactly what TMBG fans needed. The evening with TMBG also celebrates the 30th anniversary of their beloved 1990 album, Flood.
They Might Be Giants consists of duo John Flansburgh and John Linnell, along with their backing band. The National in Richmond, Virginia was completely sold out – along with all of the other dates on this tour. At the entrance, you find paper crowns, each with a respective word from They Might Be Giants. Attendees were scrambling around, pairing up with strangers to try and create the full band name with their crowns.
The set consisted of nearly all of Flood, along with plenty of other fan favorites. The entire show was just a happy sing-along, and you could tell that the band was more than happy to be in front of a crowd. The band even had the barricade moved up so they could be closer to the crowd which is unheard of at this venue; it’s clear that human connection is vital to their live shows.
The night wrapped up with not one, but two encores – another point of the show that is unheard of. With 23 full-length albums released already, who knows what is next for They Might Be Giants – be sure to catch them in your area if the show hasn’t sold out already!
