Surprise Chef, a soul and funk quintet hailing from Melbourne, brought Australian jazz and vivid musical arrangements to the intimate Pyramid Scheme venue in Grand Rapids, MI. Comprised of Lachlan Stuckey on guitar, Jethro Curtin on keys, Carl Lindeberg on bass, Andrew Congues on drums, and Hudson Whitlock who does it all, these five express a unique perspective of music not seen very often. Without lyrics, Surprise Chef’s vivid soundscapes and emotional stage presence were all they needed to get the crowd moving, smiling, and dancing along with them.
The boundaries of music as we know it are definitely pushed with the genre of music that Surprise Chef is pursuing. Even though I enjoyed their sound prior to the show, I was curious as to how their performance would be without anything to sing along to. I’m glad I was shown differently. The crowd was so open to engaging with, not only the group, but with each other as well, which made for an even more magical night.
