Sophie Powers: Glitch

Mercury Lounge (New York, NY)
08/08/2024

Sophie Powers is the total package: a vocal powerhouse with impeccable fashion sense and a stage presence that demands you throw your hands up and dance. She’s like if an NPC in your favorite game crashed out of the screen onto the stage. You’d never believe that her show at the Mercury Lounge in NYC was the penultimate stop on her first ever headlining tour. Sophie Powers has the IT-factor. If you’re not already tuned in, you’re missing out.

Sophie Powers wasted no time getting the crowd’s energy up, kicking off the set with her viral hits “Obsessed” and “Nosebleed.” Sophie Powers’ music has all the bubblegum and angst of the early 2000s, paired with modern electronic production. It was easy to forget that I was in a 250-capacity venue and not at a stadium tour. Supported by her drummer, guitarist, and backup dancers, Sophie Powers lit up the stage. She kept the momentum through the whole show, running through her new E.P., Glitch, her other hits, and some covers. Sophie Powers puts her own unique spin on everything she does. This is a performer who isn’t afraid to stand out. Sophie Powers rocked the stage like it was a headlining set at the biggest music festival.

Despite the high energy of the show, Sophie Powers maintained a close connection with the room. As an artist who found her crowd on TikTok, it’s clear that Sophie Powers appreciates her loyal audience. Between songs, she chatted with fans as she introduced songs. At one point, she scoured the crowd for a “handsome boy who wants to come up on stage.” After finding the perfect fit, Sophie Powers serenaded him with an electronic rendition of “Wildest Dreams” by Taylor Swift. The pair danced around the stage, emanating a pure joy that filled the room. This sweet serenade wasn’t even the peak of her crowd interaction. Near the end of the set, Sophie Powers hopped into the crowd, dancing through the pit and singing with her fans. She even stayed after the set to meet every single person at her merch booth. Sophie Powers is someone whose confidence is inspiring, not intimidating. You see her owning her style, and feel empowered to do the same.

Sophie Powers is an artist to watch. You can feel her passion from the stage. When a performer loves what they do, they create electric energy in any room they enter. Sophie Powers will continue to infect bigger and bigger rooms with her confidence and charm until she takes over the scene. The “Glitch” tour is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to see how Sophie Powers grows into her power.
