TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park (Indianapolis, Indiana)

It’s easy to argue that My Morning Jacket is a band best seen live in the summertime. Something about those laser beams and five-minute-long outros makes you want to thrash around with your toes deep in the June grass, and that’s exactly what the crowd did at the TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was the perfect way to spend the first Friday of summer.
The band began their set with a rare performance of “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” which has only been played three times on this tour so far. The rest of the band joined in on “Run It,” and the energy began to build. Each song was its own soul-filled declaration of humanity – the kind of music that makes you want to howl like a feral animal.
The crowd was a sight to behold. Total strangers locked arms and danced during the performance of “Lucky To Be Alive” while the sun set behind the hazy stage. This song appears on My Morning Jacket’s self-titled full-length album which was released in 2021. The band has since released two live records and one remaster of 2011’s Circutial.
Frontman Jim James always leads with grace and emotion, and the cadence of the band was steady and confident. The encore consisted of four songs including one of their most well-known tunes, “Wordless Chorus,” from their 2005 record, Z. After a nearly three-hour-long set, the crowd wandered out into the thick night, leaving only the remnants of pure rock and roll sizzling in the air.
