Joyce Manor

The Regency Ballroom (San Francisco, CA)
03/12/23

Punk-rock band Joyce Manor brought their fast-paced set to the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, CA and brought their fans out of the woodwork to crowdsurf all night. They spent most of March on the road alongside PUP on a co-headlining tour, playing two nights in San Francisco.

The band, consisting of lead vocalist and guitarist Barry Johnson, guitarist Chase Knobbe, and bassist Matt Ebert, released their 6th studio album last June, entitled 40 oz. to Fresno. The album is under 17 minutes long and contains 9 tracks, the songs averaging 1 minute and 41 seconds long. This is consistent with their previous music, as they have always leaned toward being short and hard-hitting – with the exception of their 2016 album, Cody. Although the industry standard has always favored songs that were at least 3 minutes long, and now 2-3 minutes due to streaming platforms, Joyce Manor has never shied away from making music the way they want to make it. And so, with most of their songs being under the 2 minute mark, the show was sprint-after-sprint, packing 22 songs into their 45-minute set.

As soon as the band stepped onstage with “NBTSA” from 40 oz. to Fresno, the crowd went wild with frenzied energy. They ripped through the set, playing music from most of their albums, including “Violent Inside” from 2012 debut album Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired, “Catalina Fight Song” from 2014 album Never Hungover Again, and their most-streamed song on Spotify, “Constant Headache,” from 2013 album S/T. At some point, lead vocalist Barry Johnson went down to the barricade, singing directly to people in the crowd and crowd surfers passing by. Judging by a mostly empty balcony, people didn’t show up just to sit around – by the end of the show, the entire room was sticky with sweat.

If you missed out on Joyce Manor during this co-headlining run that mostly covered the West Coast and a bit of the Midwest, they will be joining Weezer to support their tour dates all over the East Coast and a bit of the Midwest in June and July!
