Baby’s All Right (Brooklyn, NYC)
03/29/23
JAWNY, previously known as Johnny Utah, captivated the audience at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn last week. The singer and multi-instrumentalist instantly connected with the audience, taking his time to speak to the crowd and genuinely thank us all for coming out. He remarked on the small size of the room, saying that the barricades keep getting further and further away at other venues, causing everyone in the audience to appreciate the intimate atmosphere. This sold-out Wednesday night show was added as an overflow show for the sold-out Friday show two days later, a testament to JAWNY’s continuously growing popularity.
Not only was JAWNY insanely charismatic with the crowd, but his guitarist, Gambee, and his drummer, Curtis, also matched his infectious energy. It amazed me how much stamina they all had, remaining lively for the entire performance. You could tell how much they were enjoying themselves which only made the experience watching them so much more fun. They played an engaging set that mostly consisted of tracks from JAWNY’s recent debut album, It’s Never Fair, Always True, but also featured a cover of Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” and some of his early hits such as “Honeypie” and “Anything You Want.” The setlist had to be cut down due to the early start time and limited time allotted, but despite the one-hour time constraint, JAWNY truly made sure his fans didn’t feel cheated out of a show.
His music is addictive, but JAWNY’s ability to connect with his fans makes him a stand-out artist. I lost count of how many times he thanked his fans for supporting him and how many times he made everyone laugh; his long and thoughtful Instagram captions for each show only share the same sentiments. Don’t miss a chance to catch one of his shows!
