flipturn: Something More

Brooklyn Steel (New York, NY)
3/28/24

On Thursday, March 28th, flipturn performed to a devoted and sold-out crowd in Brooklyn, New York. Opening up the show was Colorado folk-rock band Richy Mitch & the Coal Miners, who easily captured the audience’s attention and energy, performing songs such as “Wet Socks” and “Subliming,” and closing out with their beloved hit “Evergreen.” Finally, it was time for flipturn to take the stage.

flipturn kicked off their set with three of their most iconic, older hits – “Churches” off 2018 E.P. Citrona, followed with “Vanilla” and “Chicago” off 2017 E.P. Heavy Colors. They then dove into a small handful of newer songs, including “The Fall” and “Sad Disco” off debut L.P. Shadowglow, and a new, unreleased song entitled “Juno.” The rest of their set continued similarly, a perfectly curated balance of old and new – including a first on the tour performance of “Brooklyn Baby” in celebration of their biggest headlining show yet in the city, as well as an incredible cover of The Strokes’ “Reptilia.” They ended their set with an incredibly energetic performance of their hit, “Nickel,” which left the crowd both fully depleted of energy from how hard they went and yet somehow still yelling for more.

flipturn is a band with an absolutely incredible discography topped only by their impeccable live show. Whether they’re playing to a large sold-out crowd on a headliner, an intimate room, or a festival stage – they know how to work an audience and get people dancing. All members have incredible onstage energy individually and with each other, and the group as a whole has chemistry and love for each other that is palpable. Singer Dillon Basse repeatedly hopped off stage to get into the audience, who were already screaming in delight before the show had even started, and gave back just as much energy as he was giving them. Dillon and bassist Madeline danced with each other, jumped around an impressive amount, and really made use of the entire stage and audience as a part of their set. Drummer Devon VonBalson had an amusing bit where he put a tom from his kit on top of his head and played blind, and even got into the crowd at one point, having audience members hold a drum up for him to play. Another highlight moment was the onstage celebration of guitarist Tristan Duncan’s birthday.

flipturn is an indie-rock band from Fernandina Beach, Florida that have been steadily on the rise and making a name for themselves over the past few years. Their debut L.P., Shadowglow, as well as a handful of earlier and iconic E.P.s are available on streaming platforms, and they plan to continue touring across the United States throughout the end of April.
