Catie Turner: Comedy & Tragedy

The Troubador (West Hollywood, CA)
06/27/23

Singer-songwriter Catie Turner headlined the iconic Troubadour in West Hollywood, California on June 27th. Fans lined up Santa Monica Boulevard waiting for hours in the hot sun, hoping to get a glimpse of Catie and her band as they arrived ahead of the show. As fans waited for the concert to begin, they chatted with and befriended the strangers surrounding them. By the end of the show, we had heard Catie Turner’s entire third E.P., Comedy and Tragedy, as well as some older fan favorites.

Turner started off her set with her heartbreakingly honest song, “God Must Hate Me,” containing raw lyrics written from her personal experience. To bring up the energy level a bit, she moved onto her single entitled “Nothing” with insincere but honest words. Next was the upbeat hit song, “Hyperfixations.” Fans screamed the lyrics along with Turner as she danced and moved about the stage. To the crowd’s delight, she sang “Therapy,” as a result of her “spin to win” wheel which had a bunch of her songs as options. Following this was “Easy,” the vulnerable song she wrote while high during a depressive episode. Later on in the show, Catie invited her opener, Sophie Holohan, back onstage to sing a duet cover of “Breaking Free” from High School Musical. After dancing around together onstage, Catie slowed the pace back down to sing her stripped down song, “Home.” During the chorus, the crowd harmonized and sang the lyrics at the top of their lungs as they waved their phone flashlights back and forth to the rhythm of the song. We were then treated to hearing one of my personal favorites of Catie’s, “i luv him.,” live on acoustic guitar.

At the end of the show, Catie came back out on stage to sing “Stepmom” and “Hometown.” The audience jumped up and down as she moved around the stage and interacted with the people in the first few rows. Her honest and relatable songwriting mixed with complete chaos is infectious and made her concert one of my favorites of the year so far!
