HI-FI (Indianapolis, IN)

On a cold January night at the HI-FI in Indianapolis, Indiana, Cass McCombs and his band made a stop on their tour supporting their latest album, Heartmind. The album is a simple yet masterful collection of chirpy tunes which are a clear reflection of both Cass’ heart and mind. With his first release aging back to 2002, Cass isn’t necessarily a new arrival to the scene, but he has a way of keeping his distinct sound fresh enough to attract the attention of new listeners and keep his dedicated fanbase invested.
The set opened with a burst of energy as the band began with “Sacred Heart” from 2004’s PREfection and the audience quickly came to life. Eyes closed and heads swayed to the dreamy and psychedelic tune, “Bum bum bum,” which lives in Cass McCombs’ 2016 record, Mangy Love. Cass has this musical presence that can somehow make a room packed with people still feel intimate. As the night came to an end, the sound mellowed out with a long instrumental break in “Medusa’s Outhouse,” and by the end of the setlist, the crowd fizzled out wearing satisfied smiles all the way home.
