Briston Maroney: Ultrapure

Webster Hall (New York, NY)
01/31/24

On Wednesday, January 31st, Briston Maroney performed the second of two sold-out nights at New York City’s iconic Webster Hall to a room of excited fans. Opening up the night was singer-songwriter Phoebe Go with a really stunning set of songs that captured the audience’s full attention and created a really lovely and calm atmosphere in a room that moments before had been overwhelmingly loud and disconnected. Following Phoebe’s performance, an unexpected guest came onstage to introduce Briston and the band – TikToker Joey Dardano. He gave a nice spiel about Briston and the band and then pulled out a guitar, taking the opportunity to of course play a quick cover of Oasis’ Wonderwall. Dardano singled out one man in the balcony and dared him to sing along alone while the rest of the room was silent, before finally relinquishing the stage over to Briston Maroney for their set.

Briston kicked off their set with “Body,” a single off of their latest album, Ultrapure, and the crowd immediately broke out into singing, dancing, and yelling along. Body was followed with a couple of older fan favorites – “Small Talk” off of the beloved Indiana E.P. and “June” from the 2017 E.P., Big Shot. He then took it back to Ultrapure, with a lively performance of “Chaos Party,” another big track on the record. The set continued to be really well balanced between new hits such as “Detonator” and “Sunshine,” and classics such as “Caroline” and of course “Freakin’ out on the Interstate” – the latter of which was easily a highlight of the evening. During the first chorus, Maroney pulled back and let the crowd take over – who didn’t miss a beat. There’s something about a room full of excited fans yelling out their favorite lyrics, so in sync they become a single entity, that reminds one of the magic that is live music. It was clear in that moment that both Briston, the band, and the entire audience felt that same bit of magic.

Briston Maroney is an indie-folk singer-songwriter from Tennessee, and recently released their second full-length studio album, Ultrapure, which is available on all streaming platforms. In support of Ultrapure and following a successful U.K. run, Briston has been on tour across the United States, and will continue touring throughout March. Briston Maroney puts on a stunning and captivating live performance, and the “Ultrapure” tour is definitely not one to be missed.
